Edgware History

Edgware  is a district of north West London, in the London Borough Of Harrow. Edgware is centred 10 miles north-northwest of Charing Cross and has its own commercial centre. Edgware has a generally suburban character, typical of the rural-urban fringe. The community benefits from some elevated woodland on a high ridge marking the Hertfordshire border of gravel and sand. Edgware is identified in the London Plan one of the capital's 35 major centres. It has a bus garage, a shopping centre called The Broadwalk, a library, a hospital—Edgware Community Hospital, and two streams—Edgware Brook and Deans Brook, both tributaries of a small brook known as Silk Stream, which in turn merges with the River Brent at Brent Reservoir.

For shoppers, the focus is now Station Road, with parades of 1920s-built stores and modern covered mall The Broadwalk Centre tucked behind it includes an M&S, Sainsbury’s, Superdrug and various other stores.

Edgware property is primarily the family home - there are large numbers of streets with great detached and semi- detached houses. These are primarily 19th Century but there are a good deal of younger buildings. Many of the houses are done up in the half-timbered Mock Tudor style, a style of housing that provides excellent space in the main. Most of these houses provide good gardens and the area generally has wide streets, relatively uncluttered since many houses have offstreet parking. There are also apartments available, mainly in purpose-built blocks, with quite a few new built blocks of flats including some very modern, impressive developments in the town centre catering to the young professionals attracted out here by the lower prices for their square feet. Always a good family choice with its large houses and gardens, Edgware is now providing homes for anyone interested in a great little community and good prices.

The Edgware High Street conservation area encompasses part of the old High Street and contains some of the town’s oldest surviving buildings. Half-timbered shops by the war memorial – once rural cottages – date from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, although their character has been diminished by modern alterations.

There are also various places of worship, Which include, Synagogoues, Chruches and Moseques. Edwgare is also within An eruv which is an area within which observant Jews can carry or push objects on the Sabbath, without violating a Jewish law that prohibits carrying anything except within the home. There are over 200 eruvs in the world, and the edgware Eruv was constructed in 2006.
